Impromptu meeting (Memphis)

It was a sad thing really, the fact that Amaryllis couldn’t think of a single friend that she could invite to join her for a nice lunch on one of her so very few days off. Back when she had been in school she had had no shortage of friends that she could call on at any time to keep her from feeling lonely. Now it seemed that all she had was her job. Work had become her entire life and to say that she was questioning some of her choices in life wouldn’t be too far from the truth. She had thought she could have it all. A family, an abundance of friends, a career she loved where she could make a difference. It seemed that she had only partly achieved the last one. Sure, her mother always told her that she was still young but she felt time slipping away from her. She sighed as she walked into the little cafe alone. The chime of the bell as she entered the door just served to remind her that everyone would notice that she was walking in alone. Still, she held her head high and allowed herself to be shown to a little table set for two (of course, it was). She had her pride, though, and she took one of the charming little chairs without acknowledging that no one else would be joining her, a brilliant smile to the waitress as she ordered a latte and then settled in to look at the menu.
