She liked to spend some of her free time helping with the upkeep of the Owlery; she had heard plenty of her peers complain about the growing pile of bird poo in one corner of the room. Deryn couldn't fathom why nobody has attended to such menial tasks to help keep the sweet little owls content and healthy! Couldn't Fred help around with some of the dirty work up here? Maybe he was afraid of tracking in mud from outside! Yes, that made sense! Deryn used a banishing spell to get the mountain of feces out. That was a good start!

Although janitorial duties wasn't part of her responsibilities as a prefect, Deryn was always happy to help around with basic cleaning. Somebody had to! It disappointed her that most of her classmates didn't make it easier on the staff when it came to their littering, but she found herself incapable of raising her voice about it. Why did they have to give her such a high-pressure position?! Grinning, she summoned a mop and a bucket of water and began mopping the floor. She turned when somebody entered and cried out, "Be careful! The floor's wet!"
