Darragh Brennan had thought he had lucked out when he'd gotten the prettiest woman in Kerry to agree to marry him. He continued to think fortune shown on him when he was given twin girls. That perception changed when his wife and one of the girls died of pneumonia. His remaining daughter Una had always been a bit different with her constant dreaming and chasing after fairies. He hadn't tried to discourage what he thought to be an active imagination and a possible way she was coping with the absence. Darragh began to worry when she didn't outgrow this behavior and continued to not connect with people. She'd taken to wandering since she was a child and the habit continued into adulthood where her disappearances grew longer. They were sporadic as were the length of time she'd be gone until one time she came home pregnant.

Una wouldn't divulge the identity of her child's father only stating that, "He is of magic." To her that was all the sufficient information that was needed. She was completely delighted and doted on her son when she wasn't on one of her 'walks'. She thought her father worried over nothing and didn't understand why he would always insist that Raven stay at their home instead of accompanying her. She didn't know that he feared that one of these days she would either return empty handed or not at all. She would refuse to any marriage or talk of such things. She'd even shot 'one of those Murphy boys' with dried peas in her father's shot gun who had hinted at marriage. One man had refused to marry her not wanting to be chained to her nor a child that wasn't his when he'd gotten her pregnant. He did the responsible thing and took his daughter when she was born though and had nothing to do with any of the Brennans afterward.

Raven had grown up isolated far from the nearest town thanks to his mother and his grandfather trying to protect her. He was used to tending to their chickens, goats, rabbits, dogs (to keep trespassers away,) and a cat or two (to keep away the rats and mice.) He might have been told of his sister at one point or another but he'd forgotten because she wasn't in his life. To him, there was nothing strange about this arrangement since he was allowed free rein as long as he did his lessons (which both is grandfather and mother taught him at home) and got his chores done. Hearing all kinds of stories and able to do strange things himself, he had no cause to doubt his mother's word. As if to prove her point that he was truly a child of magic, a letter had come to call him to his kind, but Darragh had written back that they weren't interested (thinking it was a cruel joke)  and hid the letter very successfully.

When Raven met Katie O' Cleary and she caused him to lose his temper as she teased him about his mother and asked all kinds of questions oft asked about her, there was an accident. Having lost his temper and his control, his magic had reacted and broke the jar containing a butterfly cutting the poor girl's hands and terrifying her that had them both run home. Darragh confessed about the letter and realized that his grandson did have magic and might need actual instruction.
